Dorthy Simmonds
Dorthy
Simmonds was born on December 5, 1903 in
Hinckley
, Illenois. She moved to
Drinkwater
,
Saskatchewan
in 1909 with her family. She has a sister Gladys and a brother Perley.
She was married to Alfred Henry and had three children:
Douglas, Bill, and Marina. She raised her children on a farm near
Briercrest
,
Saskatchewan
.
When
her husband became an elevator agent, the couple moved to Estan. The children,
who were grown by this time, remained in the
Moose Jaw
area.
When they moved to Estan, Dorthy had planned to be the
lady of the house. Teaching was a calling to her though and, when the local
school needed a teacher, Dorthy came out of retirement to finish her life’s
work.
The
couple also lived in the Kuroki area for many years: Dorthy as a teacher and
Alfred as an elevator agent. Eventually Dorthy retired for a second
time and moved into the Waneeda Park Lodge where she spends her days remembering
the old ways with her friends.
