Maria Woloshyn

Maria Woloshyn was born on August 15, 1906 to John and Nasta Tataryn in the village Olszaniza in the Ivana Frankiswsk region of Western Ukraine .  Maria, the only daughter, had five brothers: Dmetro, Harry, Wasyl, Michael, and Alec.

On February 27, 1926 Maria married John Woloshyn, who lived in the nearby village of Ostrina . In 1928, they both immigrated to Canada with John’s parents and settled on a farm northwest of Kuroki. Maria fell in love with Canada from the very beginning.

In Canada , Maria lived a busy and hard life. She milked cows, kept chickens, helped in the field and always kept up a large garden. And she did all of this while raising her three children and looking after John’s parents until they’re passing, Anton in 1949 and Katherine in 1950. John and Maria retired to Wadena in 1957.

John and Maria had three children: Stella married Mike Sowa; Bill, married Mary Chorney; Tony, married Sylvia Shuya. The family was very close and the children still live and farm near where they grew up.

Maria moved into Waneeda Park Lodge in 1989, one year after her husbands passing. She has 14 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and four great, great grandchildren who visit her often. She now resides in Pleasant View Care Home and will celebrate her 100th birthday there in August.
