Museum gearing up for new season

As another summer slowly makes itself known here on the prairies, the Wadena Museum and Nature Center is working to display more of the areas history in exciting and enlightening ways.

The museum now boasts a doctor’s office featuring some of the beginnings of healthcare in the region and an RCMP barracks/jailhouse intended to remind people and teach our youngsters of the important role the police played in the early days. Museum staff are also awaiting the completion of an old general store which will display many of the daily items that people used in days long past.

This year weekly columns will be featured in our local paper. Watch upcoming issues for “Honoring a senior” – a brief introduction to some of our local seniors honoring their contribution to the community and area, past and present. Also being featured in the weeks to come is, “Birds of the Wetlands” a weekly column intended to give a glimpse of the diversity of the birds we often take for granted as part of the background of our daily lives. Indirectly the column will also promote the many interesting aspects of the Wadena Wetlands, Wadena’s best kept secret.

Bringing these new opportunities are this year’s museum and nature centre staff: Nancy Evans, Baron Zarowny, Lacey-Anne Sanderson and Ian Kulyk.

Nancy Evans has accepted the position of curator and has already spent many hours planning and preparing for an exciting season. Nancy and her husband Malcolm moved to Wadena in 2003 when they purchased a farm west of Wadena. They have two children, Nathan and Tara.

This is Baron Zarowny’s second season as a member of the museum staff. Raised in Paswegin, Baron took all of his school in Wadena, graduating in 2002. He is currently enrolled at the University of Regina where he is majoring in History and Theater.

Lacey-Anne Sanderson has been hired as part of the Green Team. Her role will be to promote the Wetlands and Nature Centre and help out at the museum as required. She is currently enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan where she is pursuing degrees in biology and bioinformatics. She has agreed to provide the weekly columns.

This is Ian Kulyk’s second year at the museum and he has been hired for general maintenance. He is currently a student at Wadena Composite School .

Wadena News readers are advised to watch upcoming issues for events and happenings at the museum and nature centre. Museum staff has many exciting plans to help improve and promote the museum, so be sure to keep a look out for further announcements. The museum opening is slated for May 20th- Hope to see you there!
