Your Guide to the Wadena Wildlife Wetlands

Wadena is the location for the Interpretative Center with information about the Jesmer & Milligan Marsh Projects. This is the one of two access points to the Quill Lakes International Shorebird Reserve and is the perfect place to begin exploring!  Walking trails with boardwalks and lookout towers let you explore freshwater marshlands, wildflower meadows, saline shorelines, and a waterfowl feeding station.

During migration peak times there are literally thousands of birds on a normal day! Although, even if your trip doesn't work out for those times, the marsh is still teeming with birds for which the Quill Lakes Marshes is their final migration point.

The Wadena Wildlife Wetlands is a freshwater marsh surrounded by open grasslands and aspen parklands as well as bordered on the one side by Little Quill Lake.

The Wadena Wetlands is approximately 5 minutes south west of town. When leaving Wadena, go south on highway 35 until you see the Wetlands sign (approximately 7km) and then make your first right. You will then continue west for approximately 9 km. For a Map Click Here.

Wadena is located 2 hours north-east of Regina and 2 hours east of Saskatoon, just off Highway #16. We're only 1 1/2 hours north-west of Yorkton. The Quill Lakes area is one of the world's most recognized breeding & staging sites for birds. Over one million birds visit the Quill Lakes area every year -more than 300 different species altogether! The most common visitors are waterfowl and shorebirds, including the largest breeding population of endangered piping plovers in North America.

Together, the lakes, wetlands, & grasslands provide food, shelter & breeding grounds for wildlife -especially waterfowl & shorebirds. The area is also a popular destination for bird watcher's, hunter's, and tourists.

Big Quill lake supports a salt extraction plant and a brine shrimp industry. The wetlands are also an important water resource for farming practices including raising livestock and crop production. Wetlands are nature's filtration system and provides clean, clear drinking water.
